Dr Alia Bojilova, psychologist, author and Impact senior consultant joins Dan to share her research and expertise on the topic of resilience.
In this episode, Alia and Dan discuss common myths and misconceptions about what it is to be resilient. With her truly human-centred approach, Alia explains how resilience is connected to and dependent on human capabilities such as learning, belonging and curiosity. And drawing on her book, The Resilience Toolkit: A proven four-step process to unlock your true potential, Alia talks Dan through her practical framework for building resilience and empowering leadership, with real-life examples of how this plays out in organisations.
Resilience is about bouncing forwards, not back
"‘Bouncing back’ following an untoward event supposes that you want to be back where you started. All of us have experienced one enormous crisis, such as covid, and if we were to revert back to where we were beforehand we would be missing out on a huge amount of potential. Bouncing back is a limiting definition of resilience. The way I like to view it, is the ability to bounce forward better than your predicament found you."
Resilience in the everyday
"Even this definition of ‘bouncing forwards’ can be limiting as it suggests that resilience is about a challenge that is loud, obnoxious, visible, shocking… but often we see resilience tested the most with the daily grind, with the tiny little things that chip away at our armour, that take away from the best that we have to offer. So, it doesn’t have to be about the dramatic, it can be about making tiny little choices and small pivots towards being somewhere even better than you were at the start of the day."
The four-step process to building resilience
In order to build resilience in a way that is truly authentic to you, Alia identifies four areas to focus on:
- Awareness
- Belonging
- Curiosity
- Drive
Listen to or watch the podcast to learn about how developing these four capacities can empower you to build confidence, explore your potential, and cultivate your own authentic sense of resilience.
