Artificial intelligence at work
I get asked ‘will AI take my job’ a lot, especially when I’m at conferences. The best quote I heard is that AI is not replacing your job, but the future of jobs is for people who know how to use AI. If you think about where we are in the age of AI today, we're equated to the fourth industrial revolution – we’ve had the invention of steam engine, manufacturing, the invention of computers. Each advancement of technology creates new opportunities as jobs evolve and skills evolve. And so, as we think about this fourth industrial revolution, we need more people who know how to use AI and can unleash the power of the tool. There's a Star Wars analogy you might like. AI is like a lightsabre. It's a super powerful tool. But you still need a master Jedi who has been trained to know how to use the force to be able to unlock the full potential of this tool.
HR’s role in the AI revolution
Often when you think about AI in organisations people think about IT and technology. But the change is not just about implementation and adoption. HR has an important role to play in terms of thinking about the talent impact. HR must think about how we continue to upskill and reskill our workforce so that we can train up master Jedi who can wield this tool of AI in the workplace. As jobs change, we must think about how to continue to reinvent job and work processes and to help employees prepare for a new future of work. To do this, HR needs to be part of strategic conversations at board level, to bring the human perspective on change and how we can provide the solutions and the people strategy to help individuals and the organisation.
