What is talent management and why is it critical for an organisation's long term success?

It's really interesting when you start to look at this question. Typically, definitions will mention ‘process’. But for me, that should never be the starting point. Talent management is really about the development of teams and capabilities that enable you to put the right people into the right place at the right time to deliver the best business outcomes. And at the heart of any good, talent strategy, is how does it drive the business? How does it help the business to have better impact for its stakeholders? The process piece for me is what actually kills a lot of the effectiveness, it loses sight of what the business needs and takes away from how those requirements are evolving all the time.

What are the biggest challenges that CEOs from global organisations are facing in managing their talent?

It’s multifaceted – but a lot of the clients that I'm working with have leadership teams where quite a big percentage are probably going to be leaving the organisation within the next 5 to 10 years. And the areas that CEOs struggle with, at that level is working out how to get their succession working in a meaningful and effective way. So how can you make sure that, again, in terms of business outcomes, a business isn't interrupted because you've lost a leader that's been doing a great job for a long time? So that that tends to be top of the agenda when they start looking at their own team.
