Sarah Brammeier is Head of Executive Coaching Practice at Impact and is passionate about coaching. She believes that facing and exploring uncertainty and difference is essential to being, learning and leading in our age. This episode touches on how coaching can support people to explore their edges, to learn what is required to get them to their goals and to see if AI could ever step into this role.
From goals to greatness: what are the advantages of coaching?
There are two things that I think a good coach does well.
- We hold hope. Some people come and are clear about their goal. But they're not sure how they're going to get there. And as a good coach, we hold the hope that this goal will happen.
- We hold space. Often people (particularly leaders) know what they need to do. They just need someone to think about it with before they do it. Often, it's a decision that needs to be made that is challenging and we hold the space for them to reflect, safely discuss ideas and think about it.
Can GenAI act as an effective coach?
There are bits of my coaching work which might be replaced and that's part of the change we're managing in the coaching community. However, one of the things that is critical for a coach is being relentlessly curious and human centred – and the thing that AI doesn’t have yet is how to deal with difference. One of the key things that coaches can do, are trained to do and are relentless with is our ability to work with anyone, across any culture. AI misses the human centred approach that coaching brings, the human-to-human ability to adapt to difference, to create really wonderful conversations and transformation. A big challenge for AI, is that it's based in the internet, which is still predominantly influenced by the people who created it 20 or 30 years ago. And that's very different than a lot of the people who are using it now.
