Safety Policy

This Safety Policy is the primary statement of Impact International’s intent in health and safety issues. It lays down the management structure and responsibilities for Health and Safety. This web site primarily concerns the training function of Impact.

The Board is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety in all areas of the business. To this end it will take all necessary steps to ensure there is appropriate resourcing in the provision of manpower, materials and training for the organisation and arrangements for health and safety.

Organising

Safety is organised at Impact through a sound safety culture throughout the organisation. Safety systems operate and maintain -
Control through risk assessment and risk control systems, recorded management inspections and actions taken. Most mangers are IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) certified and all staff understand their legal H & S duties.
Co-operation through management and staff cooperation. Staff understand that safety is everybody’s responsibility. Staff are consulted and agreement is reached on hazards and work place precautions. We have an open no blame safety culture.
Communication through monthly safety updates, where any safety issues, new hazards, accidents and near misses are reported. Findings are communicated to all staff via staff and management meetings, safety representatives, notice boards, email and website. We have a full time Safety Advisor and a staff induction system to ensure that all staff are aware of Impact safety systems and procedures.
Competence through documented training and qualifications, both in house and national. Staff job skills are identified at interview and reviewed during 6 month appraisals or when job description changes. Staff are programmed on courses in relation to skills needed.

Planning and Implementation

Impact plans the management of safety though risk assessment identifying hazards, workplace precautions and risk control systems. Implementation is carried out by controlling identified hazards by active monitoring in addition to the risk assessment process above.

Measuring Performance

Through active and reactive monitoring. Management safety inspections and corrective action. Recording, investigating and analysing accidents and near misses for trends and patterns. Updating workplace precautions and risk control systems when required.

Review

Safety reviews are part of regular management meetings. Safety is further reviewed as needed in the light of active and reactive monitoring findings.

Independent Inspection

Impact safety systems are inspected by an independent body – Adventure RMS. Appointed by the Health & Safety Executive as the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) Inspectorate.

Supporting documentation is available for general induction, accidents, near misses, training, staff qualifications, external suppliers, activity guidance, safety checks and maintenance.

Codes of Practice

Codes of practice have been drawn up for all the usual activities Impact engage in. They have been drawn up with reference to National Governing Body best practice, technical advisers and risk assessments.

Risk Assessments

Written Risk Assessments have been carried out on every activity and location in which we normally operate. These are reviewed in the light of experience or when new information is received, equipment or operational procedures change. Amendments will be made when appropriate. Staff will conduct risk assessments on any activity, event or location that differs significantly from normal operational procedures. These will be discussed with their Manager, Safety Advisor or appropriate Technical Advisor before the activity takes place.
